What is that?!
On a rainy day in May I took a test that confirmed what I had known for a week. I was going to be a mommy again! Not only that, but my not-quite-two-year-old daughter was going to be a big sister! She took the news the same way she did when I announced what we were having for dinner. That little pixie voice responded with, “Oh, ok!”
As the weeks progressed she noticed the same changes I was noticing and before we knew it we were headed to Motherhood Maternity to buy something to comfort mommy’s growing chest. Being a bookworm just like mommy, she immediately noticed the books placed perfectly next to the checkout counter. Immediately I began hearing the pleas for a new book. Thanking God once again that my baby wanted books instead of sweets I agreed to a book that was very befitting of my soon to be big sister. She eagerly sat in her stroller reading about the wonderful aspects of becoming a big sister, while I finished making my purchases.
A few weeks and numerous readings of “the big sister book” later, my baby girl had a sleepover scheduled with Nana. She left Saturday evening thoroughly excited to see baby Emma, the doll that stays at Nana’s house. Sunday evening arrives and as we started packing her things up to come home she starts insisting on bringing baby Emma. Nana and I both agree as we notice how suddenly it has become essential that Elizabeth take care of baby Emma. Over the next several weeks Elizabeth adopts a mother’s persona where she takes her responsibilities very seriously in the care of baby Emma. This solidifies my feeling that she will be an amazing big sister. The funny thing is that if you’ve ever been around a two year old girl with the astrology sign of cancer you know how completely unpredictable she can be!
We were lying in bed the other night watching her favorite movie ‘Ella Enchanted’. Being the very loving girl she is, she was snuggled close to me with her head on my swollen belly. Colm (the soon to be little brother) had been fairly active earlier but had settled down to what I assumed was a peaceful nights rest for all of us. If he was asleep Elizabeth apparently moved into a position he didn’t approve of because he suddenly started rolling around and kicking viciously! Elizabeth immediately shot up, looked at my belly in amazement, looked at me with the biggest blue eyes you’ve ever seen and exclaimed “What is that?!”
I guess we will hold off on any predetermined thoughts of what kind of sister she’ll be until after Colm gets here! (Although I still think she’ll be the best big sister out there!)
